How to Change Ownership of a Microchipped Pet in South Africa?
Microchipping is common practice in South Africa to identify lost or stolen pets. If you've recently adopted a microchipped pet or need to transfer ownership for other reasons, the process is simple.
Step 1: Gather Necessary Information
Pet's Microchip Number: This unique digit code is essential for identifying your pet.
Previous Owner's Contact Information: Identipet will confirm the transfer with the original owner, to prevent any risk of theft.
New Owner's Contact Information: Ensure you have your all contact details ready.
Step 2: Contact Us
E-mail our helpdesk with the following details:
Pet's name and microchip number
Previous owner's information (if available)
New owner's information including: Name; a primary and secondary phone number; e-mail address and address.
After the ownership transfer has been successfully completed our side, we will e-mail the new owner their pet’s microchip certificate. This may take a few days. Call us with any other queries, we’re here to help.
Additional Considerations
Vet's Involvement: While not always necessary, it's often advisable to inform your veterinarian about the ownership change. They can update your pet's records accordingly. We discourage vets doing changes of ownership to combat theft.
Multiple Registries: If your pet's microchip is registered with multiple companies, you may need to repeat the process for each one.
Changing ownership of a microchipped pet in South Africa is generally a straightforward process. By following these steps and gathering the necessary information, you can ensure that your pet's microchip records are updated accurately.
